When you use Past Continuous

A) With clock time.

Example/Esempio: What were you doing at 7 o'clock? Cosa stavi facendo alle 7?
 
Write down what this woman was doing yesterday at the different times.
Scrivi quello che faceva questa donna ieri alle ore diverse.
 
 1. What was she doing at 5 o'clock yesterday?
Answer/Risposta:
She was sleeping at 5 o'clock yesterday.
 2. What was she doing at 7 o'clock yesterday?
Answer/Risposta:
She was having breakfast at 7 o'clock yesterday. (Or) She was eating her breakfast.
 3. What was she doing at 8 o'clock yesterday?
Answer/Risposta:
She was driving at 8 o'clock yesterday.

 4. What was she doing at 1 o'clock yesterday?
Answer/Risposta:
She was cleaning the bathroom at 1 o'clock yesterday.

 5. What was she doing at 10 o'clock yesterday?
Answer/Risposta:
She was having a drink with friends at 10 o'clock yesterday.

B) Interruptions

The second use is for interupptions.
Il secondo uso è per interruzioni.
Example/Esempio:While I was having a bath, the telephone rang. Mentre stavo facendo un bagno, ha suonato il telefono.
 
Describe the following using Past continuous:

He was watching tv when someone knocked on the door. (Or)

Important note about Past Continuous
Nota importante sul Gerundio Passato
 
In Italian you can say 'Camminando, ho incontrato John'.  In English you must use the full Past continuous 'While I was walking, I met John' (or) 'Whilst I was walking, I met John'.
In Italiano si può dire 'Camminando, ho incontrato John'.  In inglese devi solo usare il Past continuous: 'While I was walking, I met John' (or) 'Whilst I was walking, I met John'.
