When you are 'reporting' a discussion you usually move it back a tense.

 'WILL' FUTURE

 'WOULD' CONDITIONAL

 CAN
"They can speak several languages."
 
 COULD
 "He said they could speak several languages."
 
 MAY
"I may retake my exam because I'm not happy with the result."
 MIGHT
"She said she might retake her exam because she wasn't happy with the result.
 MUST
"John must go to the doctor's, his illness is getting worse."
 HAD TO
"He said John had to go to the doctor's, his illness was getting worse."
